Frequently Asked Questions
Who can participate?
Any high school student in the US or Canada! You don’t need to have participated in MIST before. We will consider your grade level from the 2019-2020 school year, so even if you graduated in May or June, you can still participate.
What does it cost?
The MIST Games are free to compete in or spectate!
i’m new to mist - what should i know?
We’re excited to have you! Don’t worry, you don’t need to have competed in a MIST tournament before to participate in the MIST Games. It’s super simple - just pick which competitions you want to participate in, and register via the link above. Read the Rulebook Addendum (link at the top of this page), create your project, and submit it online. Some competitions require interviews by judges, and some don’t (those details are in the Rulebook). All projects must reflect our 2020 theme (also linked at the top of the page). Once you submit your project, we’ll email you with livestream and interview details, as applicable. The winners will be announced at our Closing Ceremony on the 15th.
Which competitions are being offered? what are the rules?
We’re offering about a dozen of our typical competitions, mostly with minor rule changes. Quiz Bowl and Quran Recitation have some major changes. We’re also introducing two brand-new competitions - Hackathon and Brawhalla! You can check out all the rules in the Rulebook Addendum, link at the top of this page.
Do i still need to follow the mist theme?
Yes! Be sure to read your competition’s ballot and rules to see how the theme should be incorporated. Our 2020 theme description is linked above.
what awards are available?
We will be recognizing the first place winner for each competition at our Closing Ceremony, and may livestream their project at that time. For 2D Art, Photography, and Culinary Arts, we will also be recognizing an Audience Choice Award winner - see the Rulebook Addendum (linked at the top of this page) for details on that.
how do i submit my competition project?
All projects should be submitted online via forms linked above.
How many competitions can I participate in?
You can participate in as many, or as few, competitions as you’d like! Category limits do not apply.
How many teammates can I have?
There are no school minimums or maximums except for Humanitarian Service, Nasheed, Short Film, Hackathon, and Brawlhalla. See the Rulebook Addendum above for details. All your teammates must be from your high school.
Do I have to participate in a team with my high school?
Yes! You can form multiple teams from a single high school though - so if you want to create a separate Short Film project from another one other classmates are creating, you can do so. Most of the competitions are individual though - everything except Humanitarian Service, Nasheed, Short Film, Hackathon, and Brawlhalla. Some students choose to compete individually in Humanitarian Service, Nasheed, and Short Film.
how can i spectate a competition if i don’t want to compete?
Everything will be livestreamed publicly on YouTube, except for Sisters’ Quran, Improv, and Nasheed. Competitors in those competitions will receive information on how to livestream. All other competitions will be publicly viewable at getmistified.com/livestream.
how will nasheed and improv work for sisters?
Nasheed and Improv will both be gender segregated, with different judges and livestreams for sisters. The livestreams will be invite only, and will require identity verification before joining.
I still have questions!
Please email us at info@getmistified.com and we will try to get back to you as quickly as we can.
