The Oath of Time

While many aspects of life remain uncertain, the passing of time is a constant reminder of the responsibility to make meaning from the moments one is given.

Allah swears by time in Surah Al-'Asr, reminding humanity that a life without faith, righteous action, truth, and patience is a life at a loss. This oath highlights the immense value of time and challenges its readers to consider not only how much time they have, but how they choose to use it. 

In Islam, time itself is part of creation. As Samad (The Eternal) is not bound by the constraints of time. Humans, however, live within time's limits and become aware of it as days pass and the world around them shifts. In physics, time is the interval during which change can occur. Past scientists thought time to be absolute, as if a universal clock ticked steadily across all of space. Today, scientists understand time as relative, passing differently depending on an observer’s speed and gravitational environment. The relativity of time is a reminder that life progresses uniquely for every individual, and time on Earth is part of the limited existence entrusted to mankind.

Relationships with time are shaped by connections to the past, present, and future. The past allows one to learn from those who came before and grow from what has already passed. The present calls for intentionality with the moments currently in one's hands. The future inspires hope, progress, and the legacy each generation will leave behind. In a world filled with constant distractions and endless demands for attention, time asks whether the direction of our lives reflects what we value. 

This may be why our relationship with time is so significant. We cannot stop it from passing, but we can continually choose what we do with the moments that remain. What does it mean to live in the present while preparing for an eternity you cannot yet see? Time tests us all differently, how do you honor Allah’s oath of time?

We encourage you to creatively explore these concepts and more in Regional and National competitions and workshops during MIST 2027. Remember that unique projects displaying creativity and insight will be judged most favorably.
