MIST TEXAS 2012 WINNERS

Information on Scoring

MIST is made up of individual and team competitions.

Individual: Raw scores in individual competitions are first ranked. Points are awarded based on your rank in that specific competition. The higher you rank, the more points you get. The points scored in an individual competition are added to both the competitor’s individual score as well as the overall team score. The top 5 are all awarded points. Some examples of individual competitions are: 2D Art 3D Art, Photography, all “Knowledge & Quran” competitions, Debate, etc.

Team: Team competitions are those in which more than one competitor may collaborate on a single entry as part of a Competition Team. In these competitions, points are also earned based on your rank. All individuals competing in the Competition Team will have their Competition Team’s score added to their individual score. However, what is added to the Overall Team score are the points associated with the Competition Team’s rank. For example, if you have a 3-person MIST Bowl team win 1st Place, all three people will see their score go up by 10 points each towards their Overall Individual score, and the team’s score will go up by 10 points towards their Overall Team score. Not 30 points since 3 people competed, but just 10 because a team as a whole gets points only once. Some examples of team competitions include: Islamic Website Design, Islamic Scholastic Bowl, all “Group Projects” competitions, etc.

NATIONALS

MIST is composed of several regional chapters throughout North America. Following the Regional Tournaments, the best of the best compete against each other at MIST Nationals. For the majority of competitions, the top five winners are eligible to represent their Regional at the MIST Nationals tournament. For certain competitions such as basketball only the top three will advance to MIST Nationals. A complete list of qualifying competitors will be posted on the MIST Texas website shortly after the tournament.

AsalamuAlaykam,

This email is to remind all of you about the rule that states, all players who competed in the MIST TX 2012 Basketball Tournament are required to be present on the days of MIST and must show up to their competitions. Failure to do so will result in the disqualification of your entire team from the basketball tournament.

We will be verifying your attendance prior to announcing the basketball winners. This even applies to competitions that do not have an interview. If in fact we become aware of a basketball competitor not being present at MIST, we will disqualify their teams placement in the basketball tournament and will award the next best team.

If there is an extreme circumstance as to why you cannot attend MIST, it is your responsibility to email us (texas@getmistified.com) well in advance to notify us of the situation. We will review your situation and seek verification from your coach/parent. For any other questions or concerns, please feel free to email us.

ID’S and SIGNATURE FORM:
During registration Friday morning, all students are required to submit their student signature form (signed by both Parent/Guardian and Coach). We will be checking school IDs, so please ensure you bring school IDs along with your student signature forms.
In cases of students from schools that do not have student IDs, the team’s coach will be responsible for verifying that each student is from the school.

COACHES:
Coaches and their students must be present at ALL times during the 3 days. This year, coaches will have to accompany their schools to the workshops. It will be the coaches’ main responsibility during the tournament to make sure their students are present and in order during the workshops. There will be a coaches orientation held Friday morning during the students Programs Orientation.
FOOD: Lunch and dinner will be provided on Friday and Saturday. Lunch will be provided on Sunday.
DRESS CODE:
- Students should wear business casual attire for the entire tournament.
- Jeans are not allowed.
- Students cannot wear clothes that contain language or symbols that demean an identifiable person or group or otherwise infringe on the rights of others.
- Students should not wear clothes that are see through, tight, or suggestive in any way. Shirts should be long enough to cover the stomach and back side. Students should not wear low rise pants that show any skin.
- Sisters should not wear short-sleeve shirts, shorts, and/or skirts above the ankle.
- Sisters must cover their bodies with Islamic attire. That includes wearing Hijab, loose clothing, and modestly covering the body.
*Dress code violators will be penalized.
*School Spirit Uniforms/T-Shirts will be allowed on Sunday, April 8 (Awards Ceremony) only!

GENERAL EXPECTATIONS/RULES:
Students must take full responsibility for all personal belongings at all times.
Students must be present at all respected competitions, workshops, meals and prayer times.
All organizers and coaches are in position of authority and their instructions must be respected.
Students are not to leave the premise for any reason unless escorted by a chaperone/coach.
Proper Islamic attire and etiquette must be practiced at all times.
Consequences:
Any students responsible for violating any of these rules may have their parents contacted, MIST badge confiscated, be disqualified from their competition(s), and be removed from the event.
In any situation that results in disqualification from MIST, any cost toward MIST, such as registration fee, will not be reimbursed.

REPLACEMENTS: For individual projects, only the competitor who competed at MIST Texas 2011 may present their work at Nationals. The following are brand new awards introduced for MIST 2011!

1. Most Spirited Team Award
Which team will be the most spirited before, during and after the competitions? The team to receive points would be to cheer on your team-mates during their competitions and cheering the most when your team name is called.

2. Ideal MIST Team
This team has the energy, spirit and motivation to win MIST, but just couldn’t this year.
A team that’s small in number but big in heart & passion!

3. Most Loyal to MIST Award
Which team will prove that THEY are the most loyalty to MIST?
Some criteria that will be looked at is, how early the team registered, number of workshops
attended by majority of the team, if the entire team showed up and attended all the
competitions, followed rules and helped the execs.

4. Most enthusiastic Coach
Which coach will have the most school spirit? Who will pump up their team to win? Who will
provide motivation and encouragement when the team is down?

5. Best Overall Character
Which team will embody the truest ‘Islamic’ character? Which team will be loved based on how
they act and not how they perform?
Specific actions that will be looked at include: teams behaviour towards judges, their coach,
their team-mates, peers from other schools, MIST volunteers and execs etc. Initiative taken by
team to perform ‘random acts of kindness’ (i.e. Opening doors, speaking politely, cleaning up
after themselves, etc.)

6. Best Team Cheer
Most original, catchy cheer. What cheer will be stuck in everyone’s head long after the
competition is over?

7. Best Team Banner
Which team will have a banner that they will fly high with pride?
Please note, the banner must be made BEFORE the competition and brought with you to MIST.

8. Best Team Uniform
Don’t just show up in style, show up with spirit. Which team will rock this years MIST
wardrobe?!

T-Shirt Design Competition!

Announcing T-Shirt Design Competition!

Do you have what it takes to create a mind-blowing, creative design for the Regional MIST Texas 2011 competitions shirts? Well, here is your chance to shine!

MIST Texas is proud to present a fun activity to get competitors to show off their artistic abilities and have the winner’s design shown on the MIST Texas T-Shirt for 2011! Competitors are required to relate their t-shirt design to this year’s theme, “Loyalty: The Key to Faith & Citizenship”. The t-shirt design may be any four colors that will suit one of the shirt colors seen here. For further guidelines and rules, please see below.

All submissions must be in by 11:59 pm on March 13th to texas@getmistified.com, and the top ten entries (chosen by your very own MIST Texas Board!) will be up for votes on Facebook at facebook.com/MISTTexas! Images of the t-shirt designs will be posted in an album titled – T-Shirt Design Competition – where YOU will be able to vote for your favorite design by clicking the ‘Like’ button!

Guidelines for T-Shirt Design Competition Submissions:

May the most creative team win!

The design must include the phrases, “MIST Texas 2011” and “Loyalty: The Key to Faith and Citizenship.”
Only 2011 MIST competitors may submit a design.
More than one designer may collaborate on a design.
Designers from different MIST teams may not collaborate on a design.
The submission must be in one of the following formats: PSD, AI, PDF or TIFF format (NO JPEG).
The design file can not exceed 2 megabytes.
The design image can not use more than four colors or exceed the size of 10″ x 15″.
All files are to be 300 DPI at the size you want it printed.
The designer may chose to indicate what color the shirt should be. For a list of possible colors, visit http://www.iheartuproductions.com/shirts/hanes.html.
The design must be appropriate to be placed on the front of the t-shirt only.
The design must be appropriate for a MIST competitor to wear. MIST Texas reserves the right to disregard any design submission that it deems inappropriate.
Design submission must be emailed to texas@getmistified.com by 11:59pm on March 10th, 2011. Please, include the designer’s name and team affiliation in the email.
