About Us

Founded in May of 2001 in Houston, Texas, The Muslim Inter-Scholastic Tournament (MIST)
was created with the vision of inspiring youth of high school age to develop their knowledge and
practice of Islam with enthusiasm through an annual event of competitions and workshops.  The
experience helps develop their identity as Muslims.

Central to the success of MIST is a dedication to guiding the youth in their Islamic activities
through the creation of high school level Muslim Student Associations and affiliation with local
masajid.  This is a year-round process of building relationships within the Muslim community
and has inevitably helped build unity among different groups. The capstone to MIST’s
community involvement is the annual tournament that focuses upon a theme chosen for its
timeliness and importance to the Muslim masses.

Competitions at the tournament are focused in the areas of Islamic Knowledge, Arts, Writing
and Oratory Skills, and Community Outreach.  The students are provided with exposure to a
wide range of subject areas and are given independence to submit their own works in areas like
art and poetry.  The organizers invite new ideas and have introduced several competitions based
on the suggestions of MIST contestants.

Following the success of the first MIST in Texas, MIST was introduced to Washington D.C. in
2003, Atlanta and Boston in 2004, and New York in 2005.  MIST has sought out the expertise
and advice of nationally recognized figures in the Muslim Ummah.  Support from the Islamic
Society of North America and the National Muslim Students Association has also contributed to
our success.  Our first priority is retaining our Islamic values, therefore we have retained a group
of qualified advisors whom we consult regarding our programs.

This document is prepared to motivate and educate interested parties in aiding the MIST
organizers and MIST affiliates in supporting the success of MIST. It includes a high level
discussion of the MIST strategy to attract students and skilled organizers to helping this cause, as
well as guidelines to facilitate a rapid organization of the event in any region.  Please contact us

The MIST Objective

MIST produces a competition attractive to a wide range of both Muslim and Non-Muslim high
school students.  The goal is to create an atmosphere in which students of different levels of
Islamic knowledge can learn and have fun at the same time, not being excluded in any way.  This
is achieved by selecting the subject matter and presentation to make certain overarching ideas
stand out while also maintaining a fun atmosphere.

What MIST Offers

MIST is divided into four categories: Knowledge and Quran, Arts, Writing and Oratory Skills,
and Group Projects.  The following list breaks these categories down further.  Rules for each
category have been developed and are available on the web page: www.getmistified.com.   A
book list has been made available on the web page for the knowledge portion of the
tournament.
