If you still have questions after reading this guide, feel free to email us at detroit@getmistified.com!
What can I do right now?
Get your team together and register now! The registration deadline is March 7th, so make sure you give yourself enough time to turn everything in on time.
What do I need to register?
Visit our Registration page for complete details. In summary, you must form a team at your school with two coaches (one of each gender), register online at www.adderpit.com/MIST, and turn in your liability waivers. The online registration and payment must be completed by March 7th. The liability waivers must be RECEIVED by March 14th.
My school hardly has any Muslims in it, can I still make a team?
Of course! MIST is a educational tournament open to all high schoolers, regardless of faith. Also your team can be as small as one person. Awards will be both individual based as well team-based so you still have a shot even if you are the sole person on your team.
Can I join another school’s team? I don’t have a team at my school.
Make your own team! The purpose of MIST is to get people motivated to do something fun and educational. Recruit members from your own high school. We can’t let high schools join together because we want to keep the competition at MIST as fair as possible.
Can I be in more than one competition?
Yes, as long as the competitions are in different categories. So for example, if you want to do essay writing (Writing & Oratory) you can also do 3D Art (Arts). But you cannot do photography (Arts) and 3D Art (Arts) because both of those are in the same category. So even if you have a small team, you can manage it in a way to maximize the amount of competitions you’re in. One person can participate in up to five competitions (one for each category).
Can I have non-Muslims on my team?
Yes. MIST accommodates everyone. It’s a nice way for non-Muslims to interact with the Muslim community and learn more about Islam.
How much does it cost to join MIST?
Up to two coaches per team may attend MIST for free. All competitors and guests must pay a nonrefundable $35 admission fee. This includes lunch and dinner on Saturday and Sunday.
Where and when will MIST Detroit be held? Do I have to attend the entire weekend?
MIST Detroit will be held at Wayne State University on March 31st and April 1st. Yes, all competitors are required to attend the entire tournament – if you have to miss part of the day, you’re probably going to miss a competition you’re part of! Please plan on MIST taking up the entire weekend.
How does the point system work?
Here’s how competition points are scored now:
- 1st Place: 10 points
- 2nd Place: 8 points
- 3rd Place: 6 points
- 4th Place: 4 points
- 5th Place: 2 points
- 6th Place and below: 0 points
- No show: -2 for normal competitions, -4 for bracket competitions
In case you’re not familiar with how points are scored, here’s a brief explanation: Every competitor’s scores are aggregated from all their competitions to an Overall Individual score, and the same goes for all the members of the team towards their Overall Team score. The only trick is, in group competitions, the points are applied once to each student and only once to the team (as opposed to per person). For example, if you have a 3-person MIST Bowl team win 1st Place, all three people will see their score go up by 10 points towards their Overall Individual score, and the team’s score will go up by 10 points towards their Overall Team score. In terms of no shows, if the team was actually supposed to be a 4-person team and one person didn’t show up, the score for the team remains unaffected. It’s only if the entire team decides to drop out of a group competition that their team points will be deducted. However, in an individual bracket competition like Debate, a no-show would mean 4 points will be deducted from both the individual and the team scores.
Are there any team spirit awards?
YES! MIST loves demonstrations of team spirit! This year, the following awards will be given to different teams. Keep in mind, each award is worth points towards your team’s score – the winning school will receive 10 points.
- Facebook Liking Contest (which team has the most number of teammates ‘like’ the MIST Detroit page – the team ambassador must provide MIST a list of teammates who have done so by 2/27)
- Most MISTified
- Most diverse team (the team with the greatest religious and gender diversity)
- Most congenial
- School banner contest (Each school is to make its own MIST poster promoting their school. The poster must clearly promote the school’s team, how they are the best and are going to win it all, while also promoting MIST. Posters will be marked on creativity and attractiveness. Bring the banner to the weekend of MIST!)
- Best dressed
Are there any dress requirements for MIST?
As always, MIST participants are expected to dress appropriately and modestly at all times. ALL participants are required to wear business casual clothes – this implies long-sleeved shirts, NO jeans, no tight or revealing clothes, and ankle-length skirts/pants. If you have to ask, then it’s probably not business casual!
What is MIST Nationals?
MIST is made up of several different regions, one of which is Detroit. MIST Nationals is when all the regions come together to compete, with the top three-five individuals in each regional competition being able to participate in Nationals. This year, MIST Nationals will be held in Toronto in June or July. The more participants who attend from Detroit, the cheaper it is for everyone to go. Shortly after MIST Detroit, more information will be posted about this.
Can I bring someone who won’t be competing to MIST?
Yes, but they must register beforehand as a Guest. They must also pay the $35 registration fee and submit a liability waiver (find one on our Resources page).
I just want to play Basketball, nothing else. Is that possible?
NO!
Being a well-rounded Muslim doesn’t mean being awesome at Basketball and not being able to do anything else! Any competitor who participates in Basketball must also compete in at least one other competition. If we find that a competitor violates this rule, not only will the team in question be docked points, but the competitor will be disqualified from competing in Basketball.
Remember, all Basketball participants must sign and submit a separate liability waiver and abide by the business casual dress code. Don’t forget that a Basketball team must be made up of at least five participants, unlike the other Group competitions.
